Amanda is a full-time contemporary abstract encaustic artist and instructor teaching out of her studio in Ottawa, Ontario. She has been working with encaustic since 2004. As a professional member of the International Encaustic Artist Association, Amanda's work has been selected twice for international exhibitions and is a resident artist at the Galerie d’art Riverside in Wakefield, Quebec.

What is encaustic you may be wondering? Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in”. Creating encaustic art involves heating a medium of natural beeswax and damar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or with additional pigments. The medium is melted and applied with a brush. The result is a one-of-a-kind beautifully-textured and subtly-coloured work.

During this one-day Encaustic workshop, participants will learn to embrace  the basic principle of imperfection known as Wabi-Sabi; the Japanese philosophy of accepting your imperfections and making the most of life.  Encaustic is a perfect vehicle for artists wishing to explore this aesthetic. 

You will learn a liberating process of texturing, layering, building up and scraping back to create a fascinating "history of surface". Each piece will be the result of elements converging in a unique and fiercely original abstract encaustic painting, honoring your own process of self-discovery. Imperfection is welcome, play is promised, and freedom and fun are guaranteed! Take home the principles learned and apply them to your art and your everyday life!

You will go home with a completed encaustic painting. All supplies are included and beginners are welcome!

Vous vous demandez peut-être ce qu'est l'encaustique ? Encaustique est un mot grec qui signifie "chauffer ou brûler". Pour créer de l'art encaustique, il faut chauffer un support composé de cire d'abeille naturelle et de résine damar (sève d'arbre cristallisée). Le médium peut être utilisé seul pour sa transparence ou ses qualités adhésives, ou avec des pigments supplémentaires. Le médium est fondu et appliqué à l'aide d'un pinceau. Le résultat est une œuvre unique, magnifiquement texturée et subtilement colorée.

Au cours de cet atelier d'encaustique d'une journée, les participants apprendront à embrasser le principe fondamental de l'imperfection connu sous le nom de Wabi-Sabi, la philosophie japonaise qui consiste à accepter ses imperfections et à tirer le meilleur parti de la vie.  L'encaustique est un véhicule parfait pour les artistes qui souhaitent explorer cette esthétique.

Vous apprendrez un processus libérateur de texturation, de superposition, de construction et de grattage pour créer une fascinante "histoire de la surface". Chaque pièce sera le résultat de la convergence d'éléments dans une peinture abstraite à l'encaustique unique et farouchement originale, honorant votre propre processus de découverte de soi. L'imperfection est bienvenue, le jeu est promis, et la liberté et le plaisir sont garantis ! Ramenez chez vous les principes appris et appliquez-les à votre art et à votre vie quotidienne !
